Petionville’s Cash Refund wins F.W. Gaudin Memorial Stakes

Tuesday, January 26, 2010

Cash Refund went wire to wire to win the six furlong, $75,000 F.W. Gaudin Memorial Stakes at the Fair Grounds on Saturday. The Petionville gelding won by 2 ½ lengths in a final time of 1:09.56, improving his record to 4 wins and 1 second from 5 starts.

Cash Refund burst onto the scene last spring, winning his debut by more than six lengths before earning a 110 Beyer in an impressive allowance win at Churchill.  In Cash Refund's third race, trainer Steve Margolis
stepped him up into stakes company for the Matt Winn at Churchill Downs.  He ran a good second in that race, finishing three-quarters of a length behind eventual G1 winner Capt. Candyman Can.

A hairline fracture sidelined Cash Refund for the second half of 2009, but he returned to the races four weeks ago, prevailing by a half-length in a six furlong allowance at the Fair Grounds on December 27th.

Cash Refund will be one to watch on the road to this year’s Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Churchill Downs.
