Cash Refund 2nd in $100,000 Matt Winn Stakes

Wednesday, May 20, 2009

Cash Refund (Petionville) lived up to the hype in Saturday's feature at Churchill Downs, running 2nd to Capt. Candyman Can by three-quarters of a length in his first start in stakes company.

The son of Petionville created a buzz after dominant  wins in his first two starts, highlighted by his swift win last out earning a 110 Beyer Speed Figure.

The $100,000 Matt Winn turned salty days prior with the unexpected entry of Capt. Candyman Can, a three time stakes winner and arguably the best active three year old sprinter in the game.

Despite this Cash Refund went off as the favorite based on the hype surrounding the colt and the mounstrous effort three weeks prior over the Churchill track.

Early, Cash Refund pressed the pace through brutal fractions of 22.7 and 44.9. He made his move around the turn and disposed of the pacesetter while assuming the lead heading into the stretch. Capt. Candyman, who remained 3 lengths off the pace early made his run and the two battled down the lane. The Capt. looked to be drawing off before Cash Refund, displaying a great deal of heart, re-kicked and closed the margin to a shrinking three-quarters at the line.

Cash Refund will be primed to move forward off the first real test of his career. He was due to bounce off his 110 Beyer effort and he still managed to run on almost even terms with one of the most experienced and proven sprinters in the nations. He is eligible to turn the tables next out.
